Dr Ashley Bloomfield is stepping down

The icon is stepping down for an extended break.

Public Service Commissioner Peter Hughes has today announced the Director-General of Health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, has chosen to step down at the end of July.

Dr Bloomfield has played a vital role in New Zealand's success against COVID-19. At this stage in our response to the pandemic and at the beginning of significant changes to the health and disability sector, Dr Bloomfield feels July is a good time to step away and have an extended break.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has reached out over Instagram saying "There's not many public servants I have got to know as well as Dr Ashley Bloomfield. In every sense of the word - through his tireless dedication, his focus on people, his calm and considered approach - he has been a true public servant."

The Commissioner will appoint an acting Director-General before Dr Bloomfield finishes on 29 July 2022.
