If you’ve done your groceries in the last week or so, it might pay to check your mince…
Woolworths has recalled specific batches of beef due to potential plastic contamination.
The affected product is the supermarket’s home brand 18% fat beef mince, sold across the North Island.
The recall covers both 500g and 1kg packs of the Woolworths mince with a best-before date of 5 July 2025, sold at Woolworths and Countdown stores.
So far, no health issues have been reported. However, the company has advised that anyone feeling unwell after consuming the product should consult a medical professional immediately.
Deputy Director‑General of New Zealand Food Safety, Vincent Arbuckle, says that the batches may contain “blue plastic” and strongly advises against chowing into the mince.
Customers who have purchased the affected mince are able to return the product to any of their local stores for a full refund, or throw it away!
The recall is limited to the beef mince - no other meat products are involved, and none of the affected mince was exported.
Woolworths has strongly noted its commitment to food safety and has sincerely apologised for any inconvenience caused to its loyal customers.
New Zealand Food Safety will continue to work with Woolworths to investigate how the plastic contamination came to be and to prevent it from happening again.
So, check your fridge or freezer - just to be safe - before cooking it up for dinner.
