The cost of Olive Oil has soared in NZ, so The Breakfast Club found other alternatives

$30 for one litre of Olive Oil is outrageous

The price of Olive Oil has soared in recent months, with supermarkets selling one litre for $29.99.

It's due to Spain, the largest producer of Olive Oil, experiencing dry weather that damaged the harvest of olives.

Lana reminded us this morning, of the intensity in Europe "Gang work is starting to commence around Olive Oil" as it has become the most stolen product from supermarkets

The Breakfast Club looked into other alternatives this morning, with Lana mentioning "I went off Olive Oil the minute it hit double digits, but I use The Good Oil" produced in Canterbury.

"It's really good, they have quite a few different options, I didn't notice the difference"

The Breakfast Club asked listeners for advice, with Sally mentioning Peanut Oil and Avocado Oil as great alternatives while giving us tips to add to the flavour.

For those reluctant to part ways with Olive Oil, Foodstuffs North Island head of grocery Jocelyn McCallum spoke with RNZ "Supermarkets have good supply so there was no need to rush out and top up".

Lana also pointed out one way to save money for those still purchasing Olive Oil, "If you're buying it cheaper and the bottle is thinner and longer, you're only buying 250ml. Look at your bottle"
