Why is it important to plan for an emergency?

Emergencies can happen anytime, often without warning. Having a plan gives you peace of mind and helps you act quickly in an emergency.

How are you best to prepare for an emergency?

There are so many things you can do before an emergency to ensure you are more prepared when an emergency comes your way.

  • Find out and discuss the local hazards that could happen where you live, work or play and how they might affect you.

  • Make a plan - talk with your family what you will do if you can’t get home, are stuck at home or need to leave home in a hurry.

  • Have essential emergency supplies at home. Think about what you will need if you cannot leave home or if the power goes out. Keep a grab bag ready in case you need to evacuate.

  • Know the different ways you can stay informed during an emergency.

What should you do if an emergency happens?

  • Stay calm and follow your household emergency plan.

  • Stay informed: Check Auckland Emergency Management website, social media and listen to the radio or TV for official updates. Follow Emergency Mobile Alert if it has been issued.

  • Check in on your whānau, neighbours and anyone who may need help.

  • Call 111 if there is danger to life or property.

Depending on the situation and emergency, you may need to take extra measures.
