Southland bakery reckons they made a pie 'more Kiwi than Dave Dobbyn in jandals'

We chat A LOT about pies - where to get the best, the most expensive, the most boujee - but one Southland business might’ve just whipped up the most Kiwi pie we’ve ever seen.

Fat Bastard Pies in Invercargill have dropped their April monthly special which they've called the 'Double Dipper'. The lads behind it reckon it’s “more Kiwi than Dave Dobbyn in jandals.”

It’s a steak and Kiwi onion dip pie, packed with chunks of tender steak covered in that iconic Kiwi onion dip sauce, based on the classic recipe invented by Rosemary Dempsey back in the ‘60s.

But it’s not just your basic onion soup packet and reduced cream mix. They’ve levelled it up with crunchy fried onions, lemon juice, and malt vinegar for that extra zing - the proper way to do it.

They’ve called it the Double Dipper because, in true Kiwi fashion, you’re encouraged to grab a bag of chips and dip them straight into the steaming hot pie.

Kiwis are absolutely frothing over it, with one commenter writing: “You little beauty!! 🔥👏”

“I would kill for this pie,” said another.

A third added: “That looks so good I checked flight prices from Sydney 🥲”

Someone else had a genius idea: “Rip it open and just break the chippies up on top! Nom nom.”

One fella has already given it a try, smashing it back with his chip of choice - Sweet Chilli Grain Waves.

A man of few words, Robert Young tried the pie on his Instagram story, giving it a chef’s kiss and saying the crew at Fat Bastard have “done it again.”

Right, now I’m hungry… oh, who am I kidding, I'm always down for a pie.
