Wagyu, wine and gold: NZ's most expensive steak and cheese pie is for sale

A golden-brown pie with a flaky pastry top and an elaborately crimped edge, decorated with shiny gold flakes, rests on a dark, textured surface.

If you thought a $6 steak and cheese was a splurge… think again. A small-town bakery is selling what might be New Zealand’s most luxurious pie for a hefty price.

The team at The Baker Tirau have created a next level pie that’s currently being auctioned off on Trade Me for a good cause - every dollar will be going straight to the local volunteer fire brigade.

We’re talking fresh Black Origin Wagyu from Rakaia, Canterbury, a blend of raclette and comté cheese, and a gravy made using a $900 bottle of red wine.

And just to really send it, the pastry includes rendered down wagyu fat, topped with 23-karat gold flakes around the crust.

Now, one of these pies has made its way onto Trade Me, where the auction is already sitting at around $150 with just over 20 hours left to bid.

The idea came about when Australia’s top competitive eater, James Webb, visited the bakery to take on a pie-eating challenge.

The Baker Tirau team decided a standard pie wasn’t gonna cut it, so they whipped up a whopping 30 of the boujee pies.

"We thought, well, if you're going to come all that way from Australia to try some of our pies, we'll make a special pie. We'll try and make New Zealand's most expensive pie," Shane Cairns, owner of the Baker in Tirau told rova.

"Webb was absolutely stoked. He thought it was great because being a competitive foodie, he eats a lot of grease and, well, pizza and a lot of stuff. He was very happy that we went the extra mile to make him an upper-class pie."

Webb managed to smash back 13 of them in under 15 minutes.

While multiple pies were made, this is the only one up for auction (for now), making it a pretty rare feed.

"We had a few more [left]over, so we did a giveaway and then, my son-in-law said, 'well, we'll pop one on Trade Me and raise some money for our local Tirau Volunteer Fire Brigade'," Cairns said.

"That was a no-brainer for me. Our local fire brigade, volunteers... I work night shift quite often. I hear that siren go off and I know that these are working locals that stop what they're doing, jump in... who knows what's going on, but they're looking after other people in our community. I think it's a great cause."

It’s also giving PJ’s Pies in Hanmer a serious run for its money, after their $50 crayfish pie was considered one of NZ’s most expensive.

I mean, it’s pretty cool to be able to say you’ve munched down on what might just be the most boujee pie Aotearoa has ever seen - I’m tempted to put a bid in the mix.
