A Kiwi crowd at American comedian Jeff Arcuri’s New Zealand show gave him a proper shock when they shouted out one of our own national chants.
While Aussies might have “oi oi oi,” we’ve got “Aue!”
In an Instagram clip, the comedian explained he’d been asking around if New Zealand had a national chant, but kept getting a "nah”.
“Nothing? Not even, ‘Kiwi Kiwi Kiwi… Tweet Tweet Tweet’?” he joked.
Then, with outstanding timing, a woman in the crowd called out: “Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi.”
The rest of the room belted out a shockingly loud “Aue!” that left Arcuri’s jaw on the floor.
“Teach me that,” he said, pulling a guy from the audience up to the front of the stage.
After giving it a practice run himself, Arcuri nailed it, and did an excited wee jiggle.
“I’m gonna do this for 45 minutes,” he laughed.
Fans loved it, flooding the comments with praise.
One wrote: “I’m a New Zealander and was there for this show - one of the coolest moments ever when we all said it at the same time! Your genuine shock was epic! I travelled 3 hours for this show and it was worth every second!”
Another said: “I must have watched this about 500 times hahahaha 😍 love his reaction 🤣.”
A third added: “This was an epic part of an epic night! You tapped into something special. So glad to be a part of it.”
“Nothing is more powerful than Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi,” said a fourth.
It’s not the first time international visitors have been blown away by the waiata.
Back in 2022, the crowd at Harry Styles’ Auckland gig finished the lyrics after he started singing ‘Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi’.
Ruby Tui and Jacinda Ardern also led a Kiwi crowd in the waiata for Natalie Portman when the ‘Thor’ actress visited Aotearoa in 2023 to celebrate the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
We’ll never miss a chance to burst out a hearty 'Aue', if given the chance.
