Anyone remember the two blokes who climbed a speaker tower during Metallica’s Perth show last month?
Turns out the aftermath has officially landed, and one of them has copped a lifetime ban from Optus Stadium on top of a pretty pricey fine.
According to Perth Now, twenty-year-old Beau William Loch Rollings, from Carey Park, was back in Perth Magistrates Court this week after he and his mate, 23-year-old Rory Hugh Culbert from Australind, decided to scale the tower during Metallica’s November 1 show.
The court heard the pair jumped a security fence about 10.30pm, climbed anywhere between 10 and 50 metres up the tower, then stayed up there for about 20 minutes before coming back down.
Magistrate Ruth Dineen didn’t mince her words. She said “something that seemed funny at the time” had turned into a very expensive night out.
Both men pleaded guilty to trespass and, according to the police prosecutor, gave “no explanation” for what on earth possessed them. Their phones, which had footage of the climb, were seized.
Rollings’ lawyer Rachael Gemmell told the court it was “just stupid behaviour” and said he had no intention of repeating it. He won’t be able to anyway, given he’s now banned from the venue for life.
Dineen called it “an incredibly stupid thing to do and a good way to ruin your night out” before issuing Rollings a $1000 fine plus $308.80 in court costs. She also accepted it had been “a sobering experience” for him and granted a spent conviction. Rollings admitted he’d been drinking before the climb.
Culbert was hit with a similar penalty on Monday and has also been banned for life.
Unlucky.
