Metallica’s M72 World Tour rolled into Brisbane last night, and the fans were treated to a surprise cover of The Chats’ rowdy anthem Smoko.

Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo ripped into the Aussie classic, keeping their tradition alive of covering local artists at each stop of the tour Down Under.

In Perth, they covered “Zebra” by John Butler Trio. Adelaide got “Need You Tonight” by INXS and “Am I Ever Gonna See You Again” by The Angels, and finally, Melbourne scored “Prisoner of Society” by The Living End.

“If you know this song, you HAVE TO sing!” Trujillo shouted before launching into the unmistakable riff - and Suncorp Stadium lost it.

Watch it here:

Metallica and The Chats have history - back in 2021, the Aussie pub-rockers covered ‘Holier Than Thou’ for Metallica’s 30th anniversary reissue, The Metallica Blacklist.

This cover isn’t the only thing that Metallica’s been doing to connect with fans on tour.

Their band’s charity foundation, All Within My Hands, has teamed up with Kiwi charity Meet The Need for a volunteer food packing event when they hit New Zealand.

50 Metallica fans will come together to pack food parcels for families across the country - a great initiative by these legends.

And of course, if you are heading along to Metallica for their one-show stop in Auckland, then you’ve gotta get amongst our epic pre-party we’re hosting.

Join us at Morningside Tavern and Glasshouse from 2 pm next Wednesday for all the goods - Rock announcers, live entertainment, and Rock merch. What more can you ask for?

Can’t bloody wait for the lads to cross the ditch, and we’re calling it now: the Kiwi cover is gonna be a belter.
