The most explosive - and possibly the most toxic - ‘Married At First Sight AU’ dinner party went down last night, and claims of “bullying” were thrown across the table.
While the drama seemed to come out of nowhere, the real reason the night went off the rails actually happened days before filming.
According to Joshua Fox, the man behind the popular MAFS Funny Instagram page, half the cast snuck off for a secret night out in Bondi, away from cameras and production.
Josh joined Rova’s Sharyn Casey on her ‘A Little Bit Extra’ podcast to spill all the tea about that off-camera party – including how he ended up in a heated confrontation with one of the grooms, who allegedly threatened to “bash” him.
“You got invited to your own party at Icebergs [restaurant] with a bunch of the cast,” Sharyn said. “You have some tea about what went on behind the scenes of that dinner party.”
Josh explained he got tipped off about the location, and reckons some cast members - who can’t post on their socials for six months post-show - orchestrated it to help themselves go viral.
“The people that told me [to go] suddenly pretended they hadn’t told me. Everyone’s like, ‘Who’s invited, Josh? Who’s the leak?’ Then they turn on each other, and from there, everyone’s fighting. It just became a total shit show,” he said.
One of the biggest bombshells from last night’s episode was a claim that Danny Hewitt, who is married to Bec Zacharia, allegedly told fellow participant Gia Fleur Symonds that she’s more his type outside the show.
This comment was supposedly said during the 'secret' night out that Josh attended.
“Did he say it or not? Only they two know for sure,” Josh said. “But did they have time just them two? Yeah, they did.”
Sharyn also got Josh’s take on production’s response to the secret night out, and whether the on-screen “bullying” was staged or real.
He believes, regardless, "it's a personal choice" to behave like that to others.
Josh shared that during the dinner in Bondi, he was confronted by Chris Nield, who allegedly threatened to "bash him".
“If you were at my wedding, I would've bashed you… because I think what you do is meh, you’re not funny," Josh recalls Chris telling him on the night.
“I didn’t want to get into it,” Josh said. “For me, being there was work. I don't want to be friends with these people. I don't wanna take selfies and put 'em on my personal Instagram. Are these people I want to be associated with in real life? Not at all.”
I was like, oh, well it'd be funny if you did that 'cause you would've been off the show. 'cause I would've gone straight to the police, like, I'm not gonna have this toxic masculinity.
Josh added: “I just tried to move away from him because I'm thinking 'This guy is just f***ing weird'. And it was like he had a chip on his shoulder all night.”
The night ended abruptly after a paparazzi tip-off. “They went to the most photographed place in Sydney. Hello? Margot Robbie was there days before. It’s the hotspot,” he said.
After leaving, Josh claims Chris called him: “Next time I see it, you’re gonna get it. Watch. It’s not a threat, it’s a warning.” Josh says he has since flagged the incident with the show’s publicists but never got a response.
Listen to Josh’s full chat with Sharyn on rova for plenty more behind-the-scenes deets, including what was cut from last night’s dinner party and his other off-camera gossip from ‘MAFS AU’.
