It’s one thing to watch Liam Lawson tear it up on an F1 circuit, but seeing him tackle a World Rally Championship (WRC) beast on rainy tarmac is a whole different level of madness.

In a video posted to Instagram by Red Bull Motorsports, the Kiwi phenom jumped into a WRC car to pass the “tarmac test”. It turns out, even an F1 driver can get a bit freaked out when the backend starts stepping out.

"Even for me, I’m scaring myself," Liam admitted while navigating sharp corners and pulling impressive handbrake turns on wet asphalt.

Unlike the purpose-built, open-wheel cars he’s used to, WRC cars are designed to be thrown around treacherous public roads, meaning the driving style is worlds apart.

"It’s very, very different," Liam said in the video. "F1, you have to be straight, rally you’re sliding all the time. It’s an uncomfortable feeling when the car is sliding, but I love it, it’s so sick."

Fans on Instagram were absolutely frothing.

“God, I love the Liam x WRC crossovers,” said one fan.

Many called him “so damn versatile”, with another suggesting he should "get a Rally career already".

Another coined him another nickname, “the wheelman”.

I can see it - Liam “The Wheelman” Lawson.

When he’s not scaring himself in a rally car, Liam has been busy at the Barcelona F1 Shakedown.

He’s been getting to grips with a new car design that’s smaller and lighter, with no DRS and way more electrical power.

While he initially struggled to find the flow, he told F1 he’s already “making big gains” on his second outing.

"We’re in a much better place than we were on Monday," Liam said. "The main goal is to just try and keep learning and improving the car and discovering what we can."

I mean, we all love F1 Liam, but don’t reckon anybody would hate Rally Liam…?
