Liam Lawson to race Singapore GP wearing CHCH fan’s custom-design helmet

"The idea that he’ll be wearing my design is just surreal."

Kiwi F1 driver Liam Lawson will be rocking a one-of-a-kind helmet at the Singapore Grand Prix this October, designed by a local New Zealander.

The Red Bull racer opened up a nationwide comp earlier this year, calling on Kiwis to throw their designs in the mix. Nearly 500 entries later, Lawson’s landed on his winner - Christchurch dad-of-three Ian Ebbs.

"Massive thanks to everyone who sent in a design for this competition. I went through every single submission, and I was blown away by the amount of effort people put into this,” Lawson said.

“There were so many awesome entries and picking one hasn’t been easy, but Ian’s stood out straight away. It's bold, full of energy and colour, and encompasses so many things I love about coming home to New Zealand.”

I’m pumped to see it brought to life and even more pumped to wear it on track.

Ian’s winning design blends Liam’s love for golf with classic Kiwiana - think rolling hills, fern leaves, kiwifruit, clouds, and even a cheeky kiwi bird rocking a pink backwards cap in a golf cart.

For Ian, a lifelong Formula 1 fan, it’s a bit of a dream come true. He and his son Michael will head to Singapore to hand the helmet over to Lawson in person.

“This is incredibly exciting for our family. We’ve followed Liam for a long time. We never miss a qualifier or race, and the idea that he’ll be wearing my design is just surreal. Getting to hand it to him ourselves is incredible,” he said.

The physical custom lid will be officially revealed in the lead-up to race weekend this October - and we know it’s gonna stand out.
