Kiwi actor KJ Apa has had enough of his newly famous alter ego - and now he says it’s starting to “affect his career” in a video making fun of the whole situation.
“There has been something going on for a long time that I haven’t addressed because I didn’t even think it was worth addressing,” Apa said in an Instagram video, which quickly shifts to what appears to be mock anger.
“But now, because of how it’s impacting my life, I have to talk about it," he said
It’s hurting me and my career.
Apa went on to explain that a recent music video featuring a bunch of his close mates and fellow co-stars was created by “a guy” who has been “misappropriating” his image and likeness.
The video he appears to be referring to is 'Do Me Right' by Mr Fantasy, which features a huge list of celebrities including his 'Riverdale' co-stars Camila Mendes, Lili Reinhart and Madelaine Petsch.
Also appearing are names like Dave Franco, Alex Warren, Sombr, Rob Lowe, Nick Jonas, Zoey Deutch and Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Mr Fantasy has long been rumoured to be a secret alter ego of Apa himself. But despite mocking and denying the association multiple times, the internet isn't believing a word Apa is saying.
Calling out Mr Fantasy with sarcastic frustration, Apa said the situation was “f****d up”.
“I just lost out on a job and can no longer go in for serious work because people think that I’m a joke,” he claimed.
I don’t know what to do about it. It’s completely disrespectful and completely wrong.
“If anyone out there thinks it’s okay to take someone’s image - literal tattoos - and use it for their own success, it’s completely wrong," he adds while almost breaking character.
I can’t just sit back and watch it happen and see my life, everything I’ve worked hard for, now come to a halt because of this f***ing idiot.
He adds that Mr Fantasy advocates for positivity and kindness, so his message to the up-and-coming performer is to “look in the mirror and tell yourself that you’re not a liar and a f***ing thief”.
So far, Mr Fantasy hasn’t publicly responded to Apa - but fans still aren’t convinced the whole thing isn’t a genius bit from the actor.
“I almost took this seriously,” one person commented. “You’re still a good actor.”
“Maybe you and Mr Fantasy should meet and talk it out,” another joked.
And it can't be a coincidence we’ve never seen these two in the same room...
A third added: “KJ Apa is so unproblematic that he had to create problems with himself 😂”
Safe to say, these two beefing was not on my bingo card. What's next?!
