Watch: SOAD’s Daron Malakian surprises cover band by joining them onstage

“The look on everyone’s face was priceless.”

System of A Down guitarist Daron Malakian gave a SOAD cover band an epic surprise recently, joining them onstage to sing 'Cigaro.'

He was on an evening stroll in Chicago, on a night off from their current tour, when he heard their tune ‘Needles’ being played in a nearby bar.

He walked over to have a geez, thinking it was a karaoke night, but it turned out it was a live performance from a System of a Down cover band, ‘Peephole’.

Malakian strolls on in, and you can see the band’s face turn to shock when they realise who is cheering for them in the front row.

The cover band’s lead vocalist said he was “speechless” and he “couldn’t believe it”.

That man was out of breath, and I don’t think it was because of the singing.

Malakian joined them on stage for an impromptu, but epic, performance of ‘Cigaro’. The energy onstage was electric, and the crowd was absolutely frothing.

After they finished the song, the singer said, “Oh my god”, and “Do we have permission to keep playing your songs?” with a hearty laugh.

Malakian shared a montage of footage from the night on his Instagram, and he was just as stoked about the interaction as everyone else.

He captioned it with: “Let me start by saying none of this was planned”, explaining that he was taking some pictures around town when he heard the song being played, and made his way over.

“This was all so spontaneous,” he wrote. “The look on everyone’s faces was priceless. To be honest, I was just as surprised as anyone else that this was happening.”

He said he got up on stage, performed, took some pictures, and then left them to it again: “It all happened so fast, the odds of this happening were so slim. Probably had a better chance of being struck by lightning.

So many stars had to align for me to end up at the right place and the right time. One of the coolest moments I’ve ever had.”

I’ll always remember this night, and I’m sure everyone that was there will never forget it either!!!!!

The drummer of the band commented on the post, saying, “I can honestly say that I will never forget that moment. Thank you so much for taking the time to stop in and play a song with us! So amazing!”

Fans were equally as in awe of the interaction.

“Daron, man of the people,” one fan said.

“That just made so many people’s lives. That was fucking epic,” said another.

This reminds us of the time someone was belting out Blink-182 at a karaoke bar, unknowingly performing to Tom DeLonge in the crowd. Gotta love these happy coincidences.
