Danny Carey, Chad Smith and Travis Barker have officially taken out Drum Performance of the Year for their epic drum-off at Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell show.
The win comes via the 2025 Drumeo Awards, which were announced over the weekend. The win celebrates the moment mid-show at Back to the Beginning when the Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers and blink-182 drumming heavyweights joined forces for a run through Sabbath’s ‘Symptom of the Universe’.
The drum-off landed right after Gojira’s set and just before another supergroup took the stage. Backed by Tom Morello, Nuno Bettencourt and Rudy Sarzo, the three drummers played together before each taking a solo. Barker kicked things off, Smith followed, and Carey brought it home.
Jason Momoa, who MC’d the entire night, told the crowd before the guys took the stage for the drum-off: “We’re about to witness a once in a lifetime event. Drummers are the heartbeat of metal, and we’re about to get your blood fuckin’ pumping.”
Drumeo later summed up the performance perfectly, writing: “This collaboration united three giants of modern drumming. Barker brought urgency, Smith delivered authority, and Carey contributed his unmistakable rhythmic language.
Their combined performance felt historic and electrifying, and it quickly became one of the most replayed drum moments of 2025.”
As for other Drumeo winners, Sleep Token’s II scored himself a few awards, including the esteemed Drummer of the Year award.
“His parts are sculpted, atmospheric, and incredibly disciplined, yet explosive when the moment calls for it,” Drumeo wrote.
As for YouTube Drummer of the year, popular online drummer 66Samus was the winner, with Drumeo writing, “his channel remained a destination for drummers seeking both entertainment and serious musicianship.”
That means our boy Tyler Visser, who drummed Tool’s entire discography in one go (yep, the whole seven-and-a-half-hours) unfortunately didn’t bring home the YouTube drummer of the year award. Very tough competition.
