During Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s monster of a farewell gig over the weekend, audiences around the world were treated to a massive drum-off between Tool’s Danny Carey, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith and blink-182’s Travis Barker.
The drum-off went down roughly mid-show, slotting in right after Gojira’s set, and just before ‘Supergroup B’ took the stage. The drummers were joined by Tom Morello, Nuno Bettencourt and Rudy Sarzo to smash through Sabbath’s ‘Symptom of the Universe.’
Jason Momoa, who MC’d the whole night (and popped into the circle pit for Pantera), introduced the line-up of musicians to the stage.
“I was talking to Chad Smith back there and he was like ‘this is the heavy metal bootcamp and he’s fucken’ dead on…” Momoa said.
“...We’re about to witness a once in a lifetime event. Drummers are the heartbeat of metal, and we’re about to get your blood fuckin’ pumping,”
And with that, the musicians, who were technically the seventh supergroup of the day, took to the stage to perform the Sabbath hit.
The three drummers played on the track together before they each had a moment to perform a solo. First Barker, then Smith, then Carey. And shit they looked like they were having a good time while doing it.
Following their set, the next lot of Tom Morello’s All Stars took the stage and ripped through Judas Priest’s ‘Breaking the Law,’ Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Flying High Again’ and Aerosmith’s ‘Walk this Way.’
What followed that was a casual line-up of Pantera, Tool, Slayer, Guns N’ Roses and Metallica respectively, before Ozzy Osbourne’s final set, and Black Sabbath's set to close out the night. Check out a full run-down that I wrote on the fly yesterday while it was all going down.
How fkn good.
