Fireworks ‘wars’ have happened on Dunedin’s infamous student-filled Castle St for the second night this week, which has included police officers being fired at and arrests made.

A video doing the rounds on Reddit was shared by a fed-up resident who wrote: “Another night of sheer lunacy in the student quarter. Thanks, peeps, a good excuse why fireworks should be banned.”

Police say they started getting calls around 9pm on Wednesday after reports of fireworks being set off and people drinking in the street.

About 80 people had gathered, and some decided to deliberately shoot fireworks toward officers after multiple warnings, Sergeant Matt Lee told 1News.

“Thankfully, no one was injured,” he said and called the behaviour “reckless and dangerous”.

Three males were arrested for disorderly behaviour. All were taken to the Dunedin Custody Unit, given formal warnings, and two were fined for lighting and setting off fireworks in public.

Some Reddit users believe that it’s “just youth having fun” and “kids do stupid things, but taking risks is what grows your confidence, or kills you... That's part of growing up.”

However, the majority of the community isn’t impressed, especially after police faced similar behaviour on Monday night.

“Fireworks have to be banned,” one person wrote.

This sort of behaviour is just embarrassing to watch.

“We're waking up to say that enough is enough after all of these years,” said another.

A third added: “As far as I’m concerned, ONE animal or human in ANY way hurt, distressed or (dare I say it) killed as a result of this NONSENSE is a good reason for a clampdown. There has to be some repercussions for this…”

This comes as NZ First introduced a bill earlier this week to ban the private sales of fireworks around the country entirely.
