The days of backyard bangs, pops, and whistles could be numbered.

NZ First leader Winston Peters has announced a new Member’s Bill that’s looking to ban the public sale and use of fireworks altogether.

In his words, “Enough is enough.”

“The taxpayer should not be spending millions on something that harms pets, causes fires, and puts unnecessary strain on our emergency services”.

He adds that the misuse of fireworks has long outweighed any perceived benefits.

It is backed by many other organisations, with the SPCA saying it would make a huge difference for pets, farm animals, and wildlife.

The Department of Conservation and Fire and Emergency NZ have urged Kiwis to “admire the beauty of nature without the fireworks.”

They’re reminding everyone that fireworks and sparklers aren’t allowed on public conservation land.

“Wildfires sparked by fireworks can have a massive impact on our communities, native ecosystems, huts, tracks, and heritage sites,” their Facebook post warned.

Big retailers called it quits years ago, with Countdown (now Woolworths) stopping the sale of fireworks in 2019, and The Warehouse following suit in 2021.

Peters said the Bill addresses “a hugely predictable and preventable cost for ACC and the huge costs of emergency service call-outs.”

The reaction to the bill’s introduction was largely positive.

One person wrote: “Considering Australia banned these from all but one state 40 years ago, it's about time we caught up! “

“Goodness gracious, someone has been reading the room!” Another added

While the bill would stop people from buying or importing fireworks for personal use, approved public displays could still go ahead, just under tighter rules.

Right now, fireworks can only be sold to Kiwis over the age of 18 between November 2nd and 5th.

If this bill passes, those rules will go up in smoke completely!

But, with displays and get-togethers still going ahead tonight, it's important to be mindful of your neighbours - especially with furry friends.
