Drumeo have opened voting for the 2025 Drumeo Awards, and there’s a bunch of heavy hitters in there.
The Drumeo Awards are all fan-voted, celebrating “the drummers who inspired us all this year,” and voting is open now. There are 13 categories in total, and you get five votes per category, including Metal drummer of the year, Drum performance of the year, and the big one, Drummer of the year.
Tyler Visser, the young bloke who sat behind a kit for seven and a half straight hours and played Tool’s entire discography in one take, has been nominated for Drum Performance of the Year.
Yes, that performance. Every bloody Tool song. No breaks. No resets. Just endurance, focus, and a deep appreciation for Danny Carey’s beautifully unhinged brain.
Visser’s nomination sits alongside some seriously iconic company, including the massive Back to the Beginning drum battle featuring Tool’s Danny Carey, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, and blink-182’s Travis Barker. Three all-time greats, all sharing a stage and absolutely frothing it.
Seeing a young drummer go toe-to-toe with legends like Carey, Smith and Barker feels like a win already. It’s also the category that Taylor Hawkins’ son Shane won in 2023, for his performance of My Hero alongside Foo Fighters at the tribute gigs for his late dad.
As for the best rock drummer category, Deftone’s Abe Cunningham is in there alongside Yungblud’s drummer Ben Sharp, System of a Down’s John Dolmayan, Creed’s Scott Philips, and Twenty One Pilot’s Josh Dun.
The metal category sees Slipknot’s Eloy Casagrande nominated alongside Spiritbox’s Zev Rose, Sleep Token’s II, Disturbed’s Mike Wengren, and President’s Vice.
As for drummer of the year, Foo Fighters’ new drummer Ilan Rubin is up against Dream Theatre’s Mike Portnoy, Deftones’ Abe Cunningham, Sleep Token’s II, and Nevell / Rush’s Anika Nilles.
Voting closes December 21, with winners announced later this month. Check out all the nominees here.
Drummers are the heartbeat of rock, so it’s epic to see they’re getting their flowers.
