Simon and the team tackle the wedding-ring-at-the-gym debate.
A listener’s gym message has sparked a proper debate: should married people wear their wedding rings while working out?
The solo mum said she sees plenty of men without rings at her gym and would rather assume everyone is taken than accidentally approach someone who is not available. Her simple ask was for married men to wear their rings as a clear sign they are “legitimately off limits”.
But Simon and the team reckoned it is not always that straightforward. Rings can get bent, damaged or seriously uncomfortable when weights are involved. Simon said he would always take his rings off before getting into the gym, especially around bars and deadlifts.
One host shared that their trainer advises taking rings off, too, as they can damage diamonds or bend out of shape. For tradies and others working with machinery, there are safety reasons as well.
And then there is the bigger point: a ring is not the whole story. Plenty of people are in committed relationships without being married, while some gym-goers wear silicone sports rings instead.
The team’s take? If someone makes an approach, it is up to the person in a relationship to be clear and respectful. As one texter put it, “If you need a ring to stay faithful, you’ve got far bigger problems.”
