A handful of daffodils has The Breakfast Club properly divided. After listener Rachel spotted someone picking flowers from a public patch, she texted in to say she was “absolutely disgusted”.

Simon, however, had a different take. “Well, I would do that,” he admitted, arguing that as long as the bulb stays in the ground, the flowers will return year after year.

Lana could see his point. Sure, nobody wants people clearing out an entire garden or selling bunches from the front gate. But picking the odd few blooms before they wilt and get mulched by council mowers? She reckoned it felt a bit wasteful to leave them all behind.

Speedy was having none of it. His view was simple: public flowers are planted for everyone to enjoy, whether they’re walking or driving past. If everyone decides one bunch is okay, he reckoned the flower bed could disappear in no time.

Caller Kate backed Speedy, saying the flowers are only around briefly and should be left for the whole community. At one point, the text vote sat at 70% in favour of leaving the daffodils alone, much to Si and Lana’s disappointment.

Then came a message from Hamilton. A listener said she picks a few hydrangeas from the masses growing along the river before Christmas, giving them to workmates to take home.
