Lana’s run at Travis Wetlands came with an unwanted goose chase.
Lana’s goose nemesis is back, and it has not forgotten her.
During Therapy Thursday at the Te Anau Town Hall, Lana told Simon about trying to ease back into running after her leg injury. A gentle trot around Christchurch’s Travis Wetlands sounded like a sensible plan. Until she rounded a corner and spotted Barbara.
Barbara is the long-necked local bird Lana reckons has targeted her before. And, despite Lana’s recovery and a decent break between runs, the bird appeared to recognise her straight away.
"She opened her little red gob and made the most alarming noise," Lana said, describing a hiss with a bit of squawk thrown in for good measure.
Then came the chase.
"There is nothing scarier, as an adult, than this long-necked bird chasing you and nipping you at the back of the knees," Lana said. Fair call, mate. You never quite know when they will give up.
Simon was quick to back her up, warning that geese at places like Willowbank and Wellington’s Aotea Lagoon can be equally bold. His theory? If they smell fear, or food, you are in trouble.
The texts soon proved Lana was far from alone. Listeners shared their own run-ins with geese, swans, turkeys and even a pelican that made off with someone’s ice cream in Australia.
If you are heading to Travis Wetlands, keep an eye out for Barbara. And maybe save the sprinting for somewhere with fewer feathers.
