Zayn Malik has dropped out of his upcoming appearance on the US talk show The Tonight Show.

The singer is reportedly seeking treatment from a world-leading cardiologist and won't be able to honour the commitment due to "doctor's recommendations", People magazine reports.

The One Direction alum, who was recently hospitalised with an undisclosed ailment, was scheduled to appear on Jimmy Fallon's late-night talk and variety show on Tuesday to promote his fifth studio album, Konnakol.

He unexpectedly landed in the hospital last Friday.

"Thank you to all of you for your love & support now and always," he captioned a shot of himself in a hospital bed at the time.

Malik also thanked the hospital staff, including nurses and cardiologists, who helped him.

"Heartbroken that I can't see you all this week," he continued, referring to his planned publicity appearances. "I wouldn't be in the place I am today without you guys and am so thankful for your understanding."

Malik did not elaborate on the reasons for his hospitalisation.

He was scheduled to appear at the Rough Trade Below store in New York City on Monday.

The Pillow Talk singer is scheduled to kick off his tour in May at the AO Arena in Manchester, UK. The trek goes through to 20 November when it wraps in Miami. No announcement has so far been made to suggest he won't be honouring the dates.
