UPDATE 4:45pm: The flight has landed safely and the extent of the issue is yet to be explained. No injuries have been reported.

Over 21,000 people are currently tracking a Fiji Airways flight (FJI450) as it continues to circle above Christchurch this afternoon.

The plane was initially headed for Nadi, scheduled to arrive at 5:05pm, but has remained in the Canterbury skies since taking off just after 2pm.

Reports suggest the aircraft carrying over 170 passengers may have experienced a bird strike shortly after take-off.

Firefighters are on standby at Christchurch International Airport, with Fire and Emergency confirming to RNZ that crews are ready as the aircraft prepares to land.

St John is also on scene with three ambulances, two managers and a rapid response vehicle in attendance.

A Christchurch Airport spokesperson says the flight is returning after an issue arose soon after departure.

Chris Lynch reports the plane will continue to circle for around 90 minutes to burn off fuel before landing.

It is expected to land around 4.30pm.

Christchurch Airport remains open for all other planned travel.
