Fans online are conspiring about a seemingly sour ending to the Back to the Beginning gig in Birmingham on Sunday, but Geezer Butler has shut down all the random rumours.
The global stream showed Black Sabbath exiting the stage after their final song ‘Paranoid’, while Ozzy stayed in his throne. Ozzy could then be seen yelling to the boys to “stay on the fucking stage,” before cutting to a wide shot of the crowd in Villa Park, fireworks going off and confetti raining down.
Fans took to reddit to express their confusion about the Sabbath lads leaving the stage early, not stoked about how this played out, saying it “seemed odd” and was “super lame”.
Like with many internet rumours, what people thought was a sour end to the show, actually wasn’t at all.
Classic.
Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler actually walked up to Ozzy to shake his hand before leaving the stage, in a sign of appreciation for their mate.
What the global stream failed to clearly capture was Butler then returning to the stage and giving Ozzy a cake while he sat on his throne, decorated with the Prince of Darkness likeness on it. (While we watched the live stream, we did wonder if we saw a glimpse of a cake on Ozzy’s lap, but it wasn’t super clear.)
Following this, Ozzy lifted his arms, and basked in the praise and adoration from the crowd of 42,000.
To clear the air, Butler took to IG to post the picture of him giving Ozzy the cake, addressing the rumours: “I keep hearing that people watching the stream thought our set ended abruptly… with us just walking off.”
His caption continued with: “Sorry if it seemed that way. I went off to get this cake for Ozzy. Cheers to the fan that captured the proper ending.”
Seems like another classic case of people running with a theory online that isn’t even true.
