The windy capital of the country has brought chaos today as gusts are proving too strong for some Wellington pedestrians.

This morning, a driver caught dashcam footage of the fierce winds blowing a person into the middle of a road in front of oncoming traffic.

Justin Ashworth’s footage captures the pedestrian being pushed by a large gust of wind, failing to grip onto a nearby traffic light, aggressively shaking in the wind and rolling into the middle of the busy road.

Luckily, the driver of a car approaching was able to stop in time, and the person escaped any serious injuries.

Other Wellingtonians have taken to social media to show just how dangerous it is to be walking the streets today as the severe winds continue.

Many are holding onto traffic poles at crossings, hoping they don’t get blown into traffic themselves.

TikTok user Sophia filmed her walk to work, with footage showing pedestrians - herself included - occasionally having to stop walking to regain their footing.

Others are taking the approach of walking backwards into the wind, or linking arms just to make it through.

“It’s like you’re hiking,” she says.

She also described the wind as pushing people toward the road.

An orange strong wind warning is in place for Wellington, Wairarapa and the Tararua District until this evening - so be careful if you are braving a walk in the wind.
