Co-written by the creator of 'Euphoria' Sam Levinson and Abel 'The Weeknd' Tesfaye the show centres on Lily-Rose Depp's character Jocelyn - a pop singer on the rise who gets caught up in "the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood."
The trailer is pretty mysterious, but according to HBO Depp's character starts dating "an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult".
Which begs the question - who or what is 'The Idol' referenced in the show's title?
BLACKPINK singer Jennie Kim will star alongside Lily-Rose Depp, and pop star Troye Sivan will also play a character in the show.
The ex-Disney Channel star Debby Ryan (Suite Life on Deck, Jessie) was a last minute addition to the cast; a move which seems surprising for a dark HBO drama, until you remember that before 'Euphoria' Zendaya was just a Disney Channel star.
For Lily-Rose Depp 'The Idol' will be her first leading role in a major television project.
The French-American model has played parts in French and English language indie films since she was a teenager - starring opposite Timothee Chalamete in 2019's Netflix's Shakespeare adaptation 'The King' and leading the 2021 Sci-fi indie 'Voyagers'.
We're excited to see what the 23 year old model-turned-actress can bring to the table now that she's been given a major and complex role to play. Hopefully she won't drown in the show's lavish cinematography.
The trailer promises all the stunning visuals we've come to expect from The Weeknd's music videos and Euphoria's award winning cinematography. The Weeknd's creative partner Reza Fahim has been working on the show, and with all the hectic flashes of partying and cars racing through L.A streets in the first trailer - that makes complete sense.
When we will actually get to see 'The Idol' is still a mystery. So far HBO has only announced that The Idol is 'Coming Soon'.
