Watch: ‘Hero’ Aussie Dad tackles thief and makes citizens arrest at mall

The bloke, who's a father and builder, got the thief to the ground until the cops arrived.

CCTV has captured the moment an Australian bloke bravely interrupted an attempted daylight robbery, tackling the wannabe-thief - who was armed with a hammer - to the ground.

31-year-old Anthony Haby and his partner Jane Fleming were shopping at Bendigo Marketplace in Victoria, Australia one afternoon last week, when they heard loud noises that sounded like gunshots, as well as terrified screams coming from the jewellery store Stearns Showcase Jewellers.

Anthony, who’s a builder and a father, ran into the store without any hesitation after hearing the noises - where he saw a man in his 20s smashing glass jewellery display-cases with a hammer in an alleged attempted robbery.

Anthony ran straight towards the man and tackled him to the ground, before pinning him down until the cops arrived.

While Anthony was making sure the man wasn’t going anywhere, his partner Jane assisted the terrified staff in exiting the store.

Shortly after, the police along with security arrived to help Anthony and escort the alleged thief out, before Anthony went straight to helping his partner comfort the terrified staff members. Legend.

The staff are hailing Anthony as an “Aussie Hero,” with one staff member, Tina Carson, telling 9News, “He was amazing, to not think of himself and put himself in danger…

“He thought it was gunshots - he didn’t know it was a hammer, he thought it was a gun - and he still came in and tackled him to the ground.”

But Anthony reckons he’s no hero, calling himself “just an every day bloke” who did “something that needed to be done.”

“Something I think any normal person would do really,” he told 9News.

He continued, “Glad we could help. Glad no one got hurt, that was the main concern.”

The alleged offender has faced court and didn’t apply for bail, meanwhile the team at the jewellery store have since nominated Anthony for a bravery award.

A true humble hero.

Not all heroes wear capes.
