This weekend, Good Charlotte returned to our shores after nearly a decade to rock the Auckland Domain, but not before frontmen Benji and Joel Madden caught up with their old mates at rova for a chat.
Well, to be honest, they had spent the day catching up with their *actual* old mate, Goodnight Nurse singer and Grammy Award-winning producer Joel Little, playing golf up at Tara Iti.
"New Zealand is the greatest place in the world," they told me, with Benji claiming even the Aussies tell him that.
“Don’t worry," he said. "Everybody knows."
Joel added that Aotearoa has a "mystical" and "calm" energy - he reckoned he could have even teed off barefoot at Tara Iti.
I was lucky enough to have a video chat with Joel last year, where I gave him a crash course on Kiwi culture, including letting him know the meaning of 'GC', which doesn't just stand for Good Charlotte in this part of the world.
Joel was so taken with the term 'Good c**t' - perhaps the highest compliment you can pay a Kiwi - he suggested making some special NZ merch for their Auckland show and of course, I RAN with that idea.
With the help of my workmate Ricky's design skills and Magic Transfer screen printing in Henderson, I managed to get two custom tees made for Joel and Benji in a matter of hours before I headed backstage. Along with a big 'GC' in the middle, they were emblazoned with 'Good C**t' as well as 'Live at the Domain' and 'Auckland, NZ'.
"This is GREAT," Joel said, adding, "I love this shirt!" while Benji was already crunching the numbers.
"That's very sweet," he said. "Do we have to pay you royalties if we sell these?"
"Honestly, I bet people here would like that shirt here," Joel chimed in. "They would like it in America, too."
Whether or not I should expect a cheque in the mail anytime soon, getting the chance to chat all things NZ, touring 30 years on and transcending generations of emo fans with these two GCs was pretty priceless.
Watch the full video to check out the Good Charlotte guys' receiving their merch, giving advice to their younger selves and busting a mana wave.
