Disney just dropped the first-ever teaser for the highly anticipated live-action Moana, with Catherine Laga‘aia, 17, stepping in as Moana and Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui.

The visuals are stunning, from the lush landscapes of Motunui to the beautiful people, and Catherine absolutely owns it, belting out “I Am Moana” with full power.

“I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites,” said 17-year-old Laga‘aia in a press release from Disney.

“My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”

Alongside Catherine Lagaʻaia and Dwayne Johnson, the live-action Moana stars Auckland-born John Tui as Moana’s dad, Chief Tui, Samoan-New Zealander Frankie Adams as her mum, Sina, and Bay of Islands’ own Rena Owen stepping in as the wise and legendary Gramma Tala.

The film's directed by Thomas Kail (Hamilton), with original screenwriter Jared Bush returning alongside Dana Ledoux Miller. Mark Mancina, who scored the animated film, is back, while Lin-Manuel Miranda is producing alongside Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Beau Flynn.

The film will be released on July 10, 2026!
