An Aussie tradie has been hailed a ‘hero’ after taking down a would-be robber at a Gold Coast petrol station recently.
9 News Australia reports that the ordeal kicked off just after 5am, when a young bloke walked into the petrol station and went straight for the counter, telling everyone to put their hands up and demanding cash from the till.
CCTV footage shows a tradie - who was standing nearby waiting for his bacon and egg roll - tackling the robber to the ground without hesitation.
Sasha, who was working behind the counter at the time, said she couldn’t believe what she was seeing, and actually thought the whole thing was a joke.
“He just grabbed him, tackled him to the ground, and I was still thinking ‘is this a joke?’”
The alleged robber claimed he had a gun, but Sasha wasn’t buying it.
“He just stood there with something up his shirt and I was looking like that’s not a gun,” she said, “so get ya banana out of here.” What a great line.
Police turned up a few minutes later and arrested a 24-year-old man, charging him with attempted armed robbery.
As it turns out, the tradie is a local regular - Murray - who swings by the servo every morning to grab his lunch.
“I just thought, ‘oh, great job Murray, ya did well,’” Sasha told 9 News.
Apparently Murray hurt his hip while tackling the robber to the ground, but it sounds like he’ll be getting himself free lunches for a while for his efforts.
“I think Murray might’ve hurt his hip when he took him down, so I think we’re giving him free lunches for a while. That might help him recover,” Sasha said.
Well deserved, I reckon.
