A viral video doing the rounds online recently looks like it’s been taken straight out of Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift.
Shot late at night on what appears to be a quiet Tokyo street, the footage shows a group of cars sliding sideways through a corner in perfect formation. Tyres screaming, headlights flashing, the whole thing looks pretty bloody smooth, to be honest.
The clip has racked up hundreds of millions of views, with plenty of people calling it “art” and others pointing out the obvious. This stuff is very much illegal.
“So they tokyo drift?” the top comment on TikTok reads.
While another joked, “They should make a movie about this.”
Street drifting has long been part of Japan’s underground car culture, especially in mountain passes and industrial areas after dark. It’s where the sport was born before going legit, and it’s also where things can obviously go badly wrong.
These days, drifting in Japan has a proper home. Controlled events like the D1 Grand Prix draw massive crowds, pro drivers, and international attention. It’s legal, it’s regulated, and it’s something Japan is genuinely proud of.
Public roads are a different story - Japanese police are actively cracking down, especially as more viral clips like this keep popping up. Authorities have already flagged tougher penalties for dangerous driving in the coming years.
Enjoy the clip, admire the talent… but maybe leave the Tokyo Drift dreams for the PlayStation.
