Turns out the way we’ve been slicing and spreading avocado on toast might be completely inefficient – and one genius reckons he’s got a better way.
TikToker Mikey Bee (@mikey_bee99) has shared a clever hack to cut and store your avo that not only slows down browning but makes spreading it easy as.
In the clip, which has now racked up over 8.8 million views, Mikey explains you shouldn’t cut your avo lengthwise, because that exposes more of the surface to oxygen.
Instead, he slices about a third of the way down from the top, which exposes less flesh to the air and creates a perfect surface to scoop and spread it like butter.
Dare I say the best part, though, is when you’re done scooping, you can just place the cut side down on a plate to block more oxygen and keep it fresher for longer.
The hack itself is nothing new, in fact, Mikey told News.com.au that he’s been slicing like this “as long as he can remember.”
The reactions are torn, with some calling it “brilliant” and others thinking it might be useless.
“Forever cutting my avocado this way,” one commenter wrote.
“Chief. This is a MIRACLE!!! 😀,” said another.
A third praised: “Really good tip, actually brilliant. I'm always throwing half away coz it goes bad quickly.”
Others can appreciate the hack, but the majority of them have said there’s usually no leftovers to put this hack to use.
“It has never occurred to me that I don't have to eat the whole avocado,” someone wrote. “My millennial toast just can't compute that.”
Another added: “Funny, you think there will be leftovers, lol.”
“This feels illegal somehow,” said a third.
The other concern is what happens to the pit, but Mikey says it’s no problem.
In a follow-up vid, he shows an empty avo shell and says: “You basically just scoop it out. OBVIOUSLY.”
“The pit also keeps the avocado from going brown, that’s why they drop it in guacamole - at least, that’s what I’ve been told,” he adds.
Whether or not you’ll actually try it, you’ve gotta admit – it’s a smart little hack. I’m now considering testing my self-control just to give it a go next time.
