Popular vape product recalled over ingredient linked to popcorn lung

"Anyone who has this should immediately stop using it."

A vape juice sold around the country has been recalled after it was found to have high levels of a chemical linked to popcorn lung.

The Ministry of Health has issued a warning about the Suntree Vanilla Cream vape liquid (30ml, 18mg nicotine), which had a whopping four times the legal limit of diacetyl.

The chemical, also known as butanedione or butane-2,3-dione, is a flavouring chemical that gives vape flavours a buttery or creamy taste.

In NZ, the legal limit for diacetyl in vape juice is 22 parts per million (ppm). This product tested at nearly 90ppm - well over the mark.

When inhaled, especially in large amounts, it can cause irritation that’s been linked to serious lung damage.

Hoopers Vapour Ltd, who sold the product, is leading the recall to get the vape juice off shelves.

According to the recall, approximately 300 bottles have been sold in the past 17 months. Affected products were sold between February 1, 2024 - 15 July 2025.

The Ministry says that short-term use is unlikely to cause major issues, but if you’ve been filling your pods, inhaling this product and feel off, it’s best to seek medical advice from your GP.

Symptoms may include a shortness of breath, dry cough, wheeze, and fatigue.

“Anyone who has this product should immediately stop using it,” the Ministry said.

“Any unused product can be disposed of by returning it to the store where it was purchased or by flushing it down the sink with plenty of cold water,” they advised.

Popcorn lung isn’t just a funny name - officially known as bronchiolitis obliterans, the condition causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways. Not exactly what you want when taking a deep breath.

So if you’ve been puffing Suntree Vanilla Cream, return it to the shop you got it from, or just chuck it completely. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
