Tramell Tillman admits secrecy surrounding Spider-Man role was 'frustrating'

Tramell Tillman has admitted that the level of secrecy surrounding his role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day was "frustrating".

The Severance actor has admitted that he had to take "a leap of faith" when signing up for the role of Bill Metzger, the head of the Department of Damage Control, because he was given very little information by director Destin Daniel Cretton.

"I'm pretty sure I had to sign NDAs even before that conversation happened," he told GQ. "It was a little frustrating, because everything was shrouded in secrecy. So I wasn't even sure specifically how the character would fit into the world of the movie, and I'm pretty sure they had to play their cards very close to the chest because they weren't sure if I was going to accept it."

Tillman had a dilemma because he wasn't sure whether to accept the Spider-Man role or wait for another Marvel opportunity to come around.

"So we're kind of playing this back-and-forth game where I'm asking Destin, 'Well, what can you tell me?'" Tillman recalled. "And Destin would say, 'It's this and that, but I can't say anything more than that.' But he told me it was a pivotal role, and that's about it. So this was a leap of faith. Do I want to jump at this opportunity or do I want to hold off and wait for another potential opportunity from Marvel?"

In addition to Sadie Sink's Jean Grey, Metzger is a character from the X-Men comics and is widely expected to return in Marvel's upcoming X-Men movies.

Tillman's gamble paid off - Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently the highest-grossing movie of 2026. It also made $1 billion (£734 million) in only six days, becoming the second-fastest film ever to hit that milestone.
