Tom Morello has joined forces with Beartooth’s Caleb Shomo and Final Fantasy XIV composer Masayoshi Soken for a new song, ‘Everything Burns’, which has landed inside the latest update for the game.

The song features in Final Fantasy XIV: Into the Mist, the latest update for the long-running online game, and brings together three worlds that don’t usually overlap this neatly.

For those not familiar with the game, Final Fantasy XIV is a massive online role-playing game that’s been running for over a decade, with millions of players worldwide. Big storylines, big emotions, big boss battles, and now, big Morello riffs soundtracking key moments in the update.

Morello says he’s well aware of how massive Final Fantasy is, even if video-gaming isn’t really his thing.

“First thing, I admit I am not a gamer. I’m more of a pinball player, Dungeons and Dragons man myself,” he said. “But I am aware of the potency of Final Fantasy in the world over the decades.”

The collaboration came together fast. Like, really fast.

“At the time, Soken was like, ‘Can you come up with something in the next 36 hours?’” Morello explained.

Working with producer Tyler Smyth, they brought in Shomo and pulled the track together under pressure.

“It really was a lightning-in-a-bottle moment. The pressure forged a diamond.”

For Soken, who has composed music for Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI, the crossover was surreal.

“So for me, Rage Against the Machine is in my blood. It’s part of me,” he said, explaining that even his orchestral work carries that rock influence.

Morello reckons the song works beyond the game too. “Everything Burns is a sentiment that people living in 2025 can very much relate to,” he said.

For anyone who enjoys Rage Against the Machine, Beartooth, and fantasy games, this feels like a pretty perfect meeting of worlds.
