Tom Morello has announced the passing of his mother, Mary Morello, who died aged 102 after a lifetime of activism, teaching and championing free speech.

Sharing the news on Instagram, the Rage Against the Machine guitarist wrote: "Mary Morello is forever with the Rebels of Light & Song. (1923-2026)." Tributes quickly poured in from across the rock world, with musicians and fans recognising the enormous impact she had on both her son and countless others.

While many knew her as Tom Morello's mum, Mary built an impressive legacy of her own. She spent decades teaching history, campaigning against censorship after founding Parents for Rock and Rap, and supporting causes ranging from civil rights and organised labour to anti-apartheid movements and community organisations helping people doing it tough.

Morello has often spoken about the influence his mother had on his life. In a 2021 essay for The New York Times, he wrote: "To this day I hear from her former students. Many say she was the most important educator in their lives... She didn't take crap from anyone, but taught with humor and acceptance, inspiring generations of students."

She also became something of a cult hero among Rage fans, famously introducing the band as the "Best band in the f**king universe" before their Pinkpop Festival performance in 1994.

Later, she teamed up with her son again to co-host the SiriusXM programme One Man Revolution.

Speaking with NME in 2024, he explained: "Nobody wants to hear a college lecture with a beat to it, there has to be an artistry there and an authenticity and a power and a chemistry behind it."

The guitarist had recently postponed and cancelled several UK and European shows so he could return home to be with his mother during her declining health.

At the time, he told fans: "The incredibly resilient, indefatigable Mary Morello at 102 is now feeling somewhat better and has ordered me back into the fray, charging me with rocking you and fighting fascism six strings at a time."

Among those paying their respects were Shirley Manson, Serj Tankian, Metallica, Nikki Sixx, Nova Twins and DJ Premier, all recognising Mary Morello as a fighter whose influence reached well beyond her own family.
