Massive blueberries are on their way to Aotearoa - and no, we’re not exaggerating.
The monster berries, described as being “up to the size of a ping-pong ball,” are being planted in Kerikeri and the Waikato, by The Fresh Berry Company and global berry giant Driscoll’s.
General manager Simon Tallon told RNZ the variety, called Eterna, is officially the world’s biggest blueberry - with one grown in Australia even making it into the Guinness Book of World Records at a whopping 20.4 grams.
The imported plants have been cleared by MPI after strict pest and disease testing, and they’re now ready for local farms.
"The big push is always how do you get better berries, firmer berries, better shelf life and ultimately they have to be good tasting fruit,” Tallon added.
A limited batch of the giant blueberries is expected to hit supermarket shelves late next year.
I’m still scratching my head over who would even be after a blueberry that large, but you can bet, we’ll be boosting it to the fruit and veggie aisle to see these mammoth berries in person.
All up, Kiwis spent around $120 million on berries last year - and it's no surprise considering how many berry farms we like to get amongst during the warmer months.
With summer right around the corner, strawberry farms around the country will soon be opening their doors for picking season.
Last year, we asked Kiwis for their favourite spots to go picking - and now we’ve got a full list so you can find your closest farm.
And if you manage to get them home before snacking on them all, you can whip up the easiest pavlova in your air fryer for your next family BBQ or the Christmas party that's scarily close at this point.
Okay, now I’ve got a serious craving for some fresh berries...
