Yungblud has officially ticked a massive one off the bucket list, teaming up with alt-rock royalty 'The Smashing Pumpkins' for a reworked version of his single Zombie.

The new version marks the first time 'The Smashing Pumpkins' have ever jumped on another artist’s track and released it to the world. The song was produced by Matt Schwartz alongside Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, and it gives Zombie a heavier, darker edge that leans right into that classic Pumpkins emotional crunch.

The original Zombie dropped last year and quickly became Yungblud’s fastest-streaming solo single, clocking over 100 million streams so far. It’s also picked up a nomination for Best Rock Song at this year’s GRAMMYs, which is not bad going for a bloke who still feels like he’s running on pure chaos and heart.

Yungblud has been pretty open about what this collab means to him. “Siamese Dream was an album that was there for me more than I could ever explain when I was growing up,” he told Radio X.

“To be making music with the band that created it is really quite hard to comprehend.”

He added that Zombie is the most important song on his upcoming album IDOLS, and that having Corgan reimagine it was “one of the greatest honours of my life”.

"Zombie is the most important song of IDOLS to me. It’s deeply personal and it was heavily influenced by The Smashing Pumpkins’ ability to mix emotion, cinema and heavy guitars. I sent Billy an email, asking if he would re-imagine this song with me and when he agreed to it, it was a dream come true. To watch one of my idols work on something that I had written was one of the greatest honours of my life. I love that this new version of Zombie's heavier, it has Billy Corgan’s iconic guitar sound, it has more urgency and it rips my heart out. I’m so proud of it.”

Corgan, meanwhile, had nothing but praise, saying, “Yungblud’s star shines bright, so it’s been great fun to lend our zig-zag voice to his ‘Zombie’.”

The two first properly crossed paths at Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell show in Birmingham last year, which feels like a pretty fitting place for a rock friendship to kick off.

From Doncaster to Pumpkins-level validation. Not a bad arc, really.
