Ever wondered what the trick to becoming a great chaser on ‘The Chase’ is? Who are we kidding? Of course, we all have!
The Chase UK star Darragh 'The Menace' Ennis reckons his secret to success isn’t being an expert at all. Nah, he reckons the key is “being an expert in almost nothing”.
Speaking to The Irish News, Ennis said he intentionally sticks to “the barest information”, which helps him “know a little about a lot”.
According to Ennis, “knowing a paragraph about every king and queen of England” or “a line on every country” is more than enough to win an episode of the hit quiz show - or your local pub quiz.
“There isn’t enough time to ask really in-depth, complicated questions, so it’s just better to know a little about a lot,” he said.
The Dublin-born chaser, who previously worked as a scientist at the University of Oxford, first appeared on the show in 2017, winning an episode with his team of fellow contestants, before officially joining the line-up as a chaser in 2020.
An episode that has gone down as one of the most-watched in the show’s history.
I was completely flabbergasted when I was asked to interview to become a Chaser.
Despite proving his knowledge was up there with the chasers, Ennis said it took him “nearly two years” before he could confidently sit in the chaser's chair.
He explained he’d go into the studio every couple of months during that time, using previous show questions to practice his chaser skills.
“The producers would give me pointers on how to spot clues in certain questions and how to get into the right frame of mind to assess what’s actually being asked.”
It took a long time to get there, but I’m incredibly privileged to get to call this my job.
Ennis has become one of the greatest chasers, holding the record for the longest winning streak with a whopping 14 wins in a row.
