Richard Lloyd, founding member and guitarist for punk band Television, has died at the age of 75.
His family confirmed that the musician had passed away on 7 November at his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
"His loving wife Sheila and his dog Willie Mays were with him at the end," they shared in a statement to Rolling Stone.
The outlet reported that Lloyd's death was caused by cholangiocarcinoma, a form of bile duct cancer, with which he was diagnosed in March 2026.
A crowdfunding campaign revealed that Lloyd had developed tumours in his liver, one of which could not be surgically removed.
Television, formed in 1973, played a significant role in the emerging punk rock movement that grew up around CBGB, the legendary former music venue in New York City.
The group was among the earliest punk acts to perform at the club, which had previously focused on country and bluegrass music.
Television released only two studio albums, both in the late 1970s. The first, Marquee Moon, earned widespread recognition as a landmark recording, with Rolling Stone ranking it at number 107 on its 2023 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Lloyd's exceptional musical ability led to him being dubbed a "guitar virtuoso" by his peers.
He is survived by his wife and his son, Dylan.
