What’s better than a new music Friday? The answer is NOTHING - especially when we’re treated to the latest single from Māori soul artist Teeks.
The Aotearoa artist released the song and music video for his powerfully sensual single ‘My Boy’ - and whoa, it’s like a scene straight out of ‘Heated Rivalry’.
But there’s an intimate artistic honesty behind this beautiful piece of work. The song challenges ideas and expectations around queerness and sexual identity.
Teeks says he drew inspiration for the track from his own lived experience.
“I was doing sessions back to back and got tired of explaining or correcting people on my sexuality. It got to a point where I would just go with whatever people assumed so that I could just get through it,” he said.
“Eventually, I started to feel disingenuous, and so when I did the session with M Basa and Josh Fountain, I thought f**k it. It’s now or never. I got into the vocal booth and didn’t hold anything back.”
It's been five years since Teeks released his debut album ‘Something To Feel’, intentionally using the time in between to figure out what he wanted his next project to be.
'My Boy' is our first taste of that new direction, and it's already proving to be a hit with fans.
“OH, TEEKS, YOU NEVER DISAPPOINT!” One person wrote under the video.
“Great video, as well as the beautiful song, Teeks,” another added. “Gentleness where it's needed, paired with more volume. LOVE THE SONG… Another MASTERPIECE.”
A third added: “I'm in love with this song!!!”
We know it only just dropped, but we’re already amping up for what’s next. Until then, 'My Boy' will be on repeat.
