Someone asked Reddit how to spend their whopping $1.98 tax refund - and the advice is gold

What would you be putting it towards?

It’s that time of the year again - when everyone’s out here refreshing the IRD page like their banking app on payday, hoping for a MASSIVE refund.

One lucky Kiwi recently took to Reddit to share their incredible tax refund of $1.98, asking how to “deal with this sudden windfall.” And as always, the internet did not disappoint.

The thread quickly turned into a goldmine of comedic financial wisdom, with redditors dishing out some of the best (and worst) money advice you’ll ever read.

Some couldn't believe the absolute score, with one commenter saying: "I hope this newfound wealth doesn't change you.”

“Invest it wisely, your retirement is looking bright," another wrote.

“Don’t do anything yet… don’t be rash… take your time to let it all sink in and don’t make any large purchases until you’ve taken some financial advice from a qualified financial advisor, a third suggested.

Others offered some sound advice on what to spend the huge amount on.

"Go buy a $1 scratchy card because it would be a hell of a story to win off something like this. Do it for the plot," one person wrote.

Another reckons: "3x 50c mixtures, put the rest in your savings."

"I would find a coin down the back of the sofa to bring it up to $2, buy four 50c scratchies, reinvest my winnings, repeat until millionaire. Easy," someone else advised.

Though one person had to bring them back to reality and say: “You may be able to rent a block of butter for a day. 2 licks max."

Good thing they posted on Reddit anonymously, cause just like Lotto winners, it's best to keep the $1.98 windfall on the down low before the cousins and whānau start asking for a cut.

So if you’re sitting on your own micro-refund, just know: you’re not alone. And whatever you do, don’t spend it all in one place.
