Taron Egerton feared movie fans wouldn't root for his 'idiotic' character

Taron Egerton was worried cinemagoers wouldn't root for his "idiotic" new movie character.

The British actor plays Adam Samuels, an art gallery employee who uses a carefully crafted 'nice guy' persona to seduce women before discarding them, in the new dark comedy-thriller Everybody Wants to F**k Me.

During an interview with Collider, Egerton recalled struggling to ensure audiences would sympathise with Adam, despite his behaviour.

"It's always a bit of a balancing act, particularly with a character like Adam, because he does challenge an audience a lot, and he is somebody that is quite difficult to root for at times," the star explained.

"He's just trying his little best, but he's just a f***ing idiot, you know? And I think we just wanted him to be as real as possible so that it felt like this kind of mad story could be as grounded and believable as possible," Egerton continued.

As he began to prepare for the role, Egerton joined forces with the film's director and writer Jonathan Schey, to make sure the film showed a greater depth to the character.

"I think one of the things that John and I connected very quickly early on is that it won't work if you don't at least have sympathy for him, or at least have the capacity to engage with him empathetically," he shared.

"So, I think it was about trying to play him in all of his glorious human fallibility, really," the star added.

Everybody Wants to F**k Me, which also stars Game of Thrones actress Jessica Henwick and Mia McKenna-Bruce, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month.

The film is expected to be released in cinemas in 2027.
