The sold-out sign has gone up in Wellington ahead of Saturday’s Super Rugby final.
Tickets for the clash between the Hurricanes and Chiefs went on sale to the general public at 10AM on Tuesday morning, and 15 minutes later they were gone.
It’s the first time the Cake Tin has been sold-out for a Hurricanes home match since the 2016 grand final when they won their only Super Rugby title.
The TAB has installed the Hurricanes as favourites, paying $1.50 to win compared to the Chiefs $2.50.
Both teams are looking to end long title droughts.
The ‘Canes famously lost the Fog Final in 2006 to the Crusaders and were upset in 2015 by the Highlanders before finally sealing their first title a year later and haven’t been in the final since.
The Chiefs have endured the longest drought of any New Zealand team, winning titles in 2012 and 2013, and have been in four finals since including the last three which all ended in defeat.
Coach Jono Gibbes is sweating on the fitness of a few key players following their impressive demolition of the Crusaders in last weekend’s semi-final.
Influential midfielder Quinn Tupaea and electric fullback Isaac Hutchinson are both in doubt, while All Blacks loose-forward Wallace Sititi looks set to sit out again after copping a nasty concussion in the quarterfinals against the Reds.
The Hurricanes meanwhile are close to full strength with blindside flanker Devan Flanders a chance to return from concussion to bolster their already powerful loose-forward stocks.
The teams are revealed at 4PM on Wednesday.
