If you were anywhere near a festival or rave in 2015, 'I Took a Pill in Ibiza' was hard to avoid.

Mike Posner’s brutally honest track about fame, emptiness, and chasing validation became a global hit thanks to the Seeb remix, soundtracking sunsets, dance floors, and a whole generation’s coming-of-age moments.

But fast forward to 2025, and Mike Posner is in a very different place – mentally, physically, spiritually. And now, he’s rewriting the song that defined an era.

Over the weekend, Posner shared a video on Instagram performing an updated version of 'I Took a Pill in Ibiza', changing the final lyrics to reflect his sobriety journey, personal growth, and the friends he’s lost along the way.

Same track. Whole new weight.

In the clip, Posner sings:

i went back to Ibiza

and got a hotel by shore

and i’m 12 years older and im 10 years sober

but avicii isn’t here no more

i moved outta LA

im tryna start a little family

cuz all the things i was chasing, and the things i was taking

had me headed towards tragedy

But now I really wanna live my life

And so I’m just gonna shine my light

and u know i just wanna give what i got to the world and go back home

cuz I only get this one life

So I think I’m gonna give my life

UP to God

cuz he’s got me back onstage singing

Got me back onstage singing…

all i know

are love songs.

That Avicii line took us out. One commenter said, “This version is beautiful, but the 'Avicii isn't here no more' part got me tearing up 😭💔”

Fans were quick to flood the comments, with many asking Posner to officially record and release this updated version.

“Please record this version and put it out for us!” one fan wrote.

Another shared how powerful the moment felt live: “I saw this in person and MAN😭 CHILLS. He called out people who were going through a tough time in the crowd and let them know it gets better😭”

Posner has never been shy about the real story behind 'I Took a Pill in Ibiza.' It was originally about his lifestyle and struggles after rising to fame with the 2009 hit, 'Cooler Than Me'.

In the years that followed, Posner stepped away from the spotlight, committing to sobriety and a slower, more intentional way of living. One of the biggest parts of that journey came in 2019, when he quite literally walked across America raising money for charity.
