Okay, if you save almost every Snapchat for the memories, you might not be too stoked about the latest from the app.
The photo sharing and messaging platform plans to start charging users for storing snaps and videos.
Snapchat introduced the Memories feature back in 2016, letting us save and store content for free - it was a game changer for our already full camera rolls.
Under the new plan, users get 5GB of free storage. Anything over that comes with a monthly fee for up to 100GB - currently rumoured at around $3-5 NZD.
Bigger storage options of 250GB - 5TB will also be available to Snapchat+ and Snapchat Platinum subscribers.
And honestly, it’s not going down well for those of us who’ve built up thousands of memories over the last decade.
“The day Snapchat decides to make us pay to access our memories will be a dark dark day,” one X user wrote.
“Snapchat trying to make us pay to keep our own photos is diabolical,” said another. “I’m about to delete the app once I’ve downloaded them all cos that’s a whole ass joke.”
A third agreed: “If Snapchat really makes me pay for memories, I will get rid of my account.”
Snapchat doesn't want us panicking, so they've said they’ll provide 12 months of temporary storage for any Memories exceeding the 5GB limit.
Not looking good for me, who has used 7.08GB right now...
"Snapchatters can upgrade to a Memories Storage Plan at any time, and as always, will be able to download their Memories directly to their devices," the app said in their announcement.
Looks like a much-needed cleanup of all those dog filter pics is about to happen for anyone trying to dodge the cost.
But if you really think about it, it's kind of a win. Finally, we have a reason to go through and delete some truly horrific throwbacks.
Some people are with me on this. One X user wrote: “Thank you for giving me an excuse to delete all my year 8 trauma videos.”
Another added: “Anyone else excited about snapchat deleting memories??? I really can’t wait to delete my actual brain memories with them.”
“Snapchat be like ‘here’s the picture of you and your ex you deleted off your phone but didn’t delete off Snapchat’,” said a third - and honestly, it’s way too relatable.
At least there are a couple of positives, right?
Snapchat acknowledged it’s “never easy to transition from receiving a service for free to paying for it,” but reckon it’ll be “worth the cost”.
“These changes will allow us to continue to invest in making Memories better for our entire community,” the app added.
So, what’s your next move? Cough up the cash or have a good ol’ Marie Kondo moment with your saved pics and vids?
