Sir Dave Dobbyn on what makes NZ Music ‘quirky, special’ and full of heart

Expect deep cuts and classics at his Town Hall performance tomorrow

Sir Dave Dobbyn is undoubtedly one of the most beloved and legendary musicians to come from New Zealand.

When you think of Kiwi classics, you think of him.

At the end of last week, The Morning Sound's Robert Taylor sat down with the NZ icon to discuss the power of music, his newfound love of boxing, and his upcoming one-off show at the Auckland Town Hall.

The show, happening tomorrow night (June 4), will be his first performance there in his own right.

When asked what to expect from the evening, he teased deep cuts, classics, and a full seven-piece band.

“We've got a few tunes that we haven't played live before at all… album cuts.”

“There won't be disappointment. I'm sure that there'll be enough familiarity in there for people to enjoy a couple of the classics.”

“I’ve got a seven-piece band, a couple of horns.”

It sounds like it’ll be a pretty special show - one that celebrates the quirks of NZ music, a quality Sir Dave reckons has always been at the heart of our sound and helped set him apart in the early days.

“It’s [NZ music] is special because it’s from here,” he said.

“It’s kind of quirky. It's like when you visit another country, there's always some quirky thing about it that you like or find interesting”

As well as rehearsing for the show, Sir Dave has been spending his time boxing.

Having been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he meets up with others living with the condition to train together.

“It’s a good way to keep busy, and punching things is just really good fun.”

“The sound of leather on leather… it’s a beautiful sound, like the best snare drum you’ve ever heard”.
