Join us for the latest episode of The House of Wellness with Chemist Warehouse on the Breeze, where hosts Mike and Carolyn are joined by media personality Simon Barnett, mental health advocate Katie Rickson, editor of The House of Wellness magazine Vanessa Marshall and resident pharmacist Piyara Perera.

Featured Guest: Simon Barnett

Broadcasting legend and April’s cover star of The House of Wellness magazine, Simon Barnett, opens up about his journey with resilience and navigating grief after the loss of his wife, Jodi in 2023.

Simon describes grief as all-consuming and highly individual, resisting the idea of “moving on” in favour of simply moving forward.

“Grief is exceptionally common but entirely unique,” Simon said.

“[It’s] terribly all encompassing, the tentacles of grief reach far and wide.”

He shares how routine, including early starts, regular gym sessions and a focus on nutrition has become a crucial anchor in his life.

Honest about loneliness and the challenges of starting again, Simon often struggles with doing everything on his own.

“I walk on my own, I bike on my own, I run on my own,” he said.

“I really, really hate that. I was not made to be on my own.”

Simon also explained how loss has given him a new perspective, allowing him to place less value on material success and more on family, connection and purpose.

Featured Guest: Katie Rickson

Mental health advocate Katie Rickson opened up about what it means to live with bipolar disorder while navigating life as a parent, creative and partner.

Katie reflects on the early signs following the birth of her daughter, when bursts of unusual energy and sleeplessness escalated into hospitalisation and a diagnosis of bipolar type one.

Separated from her baby during treatment, she recalls the experience as both devastating and pivotal, forcing her to confront and define her identity.

In the years since, Katie has channelled that journey into advocacy, speaking openly to break down stigma and help others feel less alone. She encourages people to seek support, embrace treatment and reframe bipolar not as something shameful but as a part of the whole and complex human experience.

Editor of The House of Wellness Magazine: Vanessa Marshall

Vanessa sat down with Mike to chat about the latest issue of The House of Wellness magazine, saying the April issue explores how physical and emotional wellbeing are deeply connected.

Alongside cover star Simon Barnett, who opens up about resilience and grief, Dr Lucy Hone is also featured, reflecting on losing her daughter and how her expertise has helped others. Regular contributors Lisa Carrington and Dan Carter return as well, this time sharing advice on the importance of quality sleep.

Resident Pharmacist: Piyara Perera

As the seasons change, hay fever remains a common and often frustrating condition caused by allergic reactions to airborne triggers like pollen, dust, mould and pet dander.

Itchy eyes, nose and throat are typical of allergies, while colds are more likely to include sore throats, body aches and fever. Timing is another clue, with hay fever often recurring seasonally or persisting year-round depending on the trigger.

Piyara explained that treatment options can include antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays and eye drops, and recommended starting preventative treatments early. Monitoring pollen forecasts, limiting exposure on high-count days and seeking tailored advice can also make a significant difference.
