Hosting friends and family for dinner takes time and effort. From preparing food to setting the table, hosts do their best to make everyone feel comfortable. But what happens when dinner is over and nobody offers to help clean up?
Sandeep from Papatoetoe recently shared his experience with Ketan, host of the Lunch Box Show. Sandeep explained that he had invited a few friends over for dinner and spent hours cooking and getting everything ready. However, after dinner, his guests sat on the couch chatting while he was left clearing plates, washing dishes and cleaning the kitchen. What bothered him most was that nobody even asked if he needed a hand.
Responding to Sandeep’s message on the Lunch Box Show, Ketan said the situation was very relatable. He joked that everyone is quick to grab a plate when the food is served, but when it comes to cleaning up, everyone suddenly remembers they are guests!
Ketan also shared his view that when someone puts in the effort to invite you home and prepare a meal, offering to help is simply a matter of basic courtesy. You don't necessarily have to wash all the dishes, but even carrying your own plate to the kitchen can make a difference. He added that close friends can easily share a little of the clean-up rather than leaving everything to the host.
Of course, some hosts prefer to manage everything themselves, and guests should respect that. But there is a difference between being told to relax and never offering to help in the first place.
The bigger question is whether helping after dinner should be considered good manners or whether guests should simply enjoy the evening and let the host handle the rest.
What do you think? When you visit someone's home for dinner, do you offer to help clean up, or do you believe it's the host's responsibility?
